Arzamas Mayor Alexander Shchelokov and City Council Chairman Igor Plotichkin awarded the Order of Courage to Dmitry But's family, as reported by the city administration on social media.

As discovered by '7x7', in 2021, Dmitry But was sentenced to 9 years in prison for murdering a girl he met in a bar. Upon arriving at But's apartment, they consumed alcohol and engaged in an argument. But severely beat her and sealed her airway with gauze. After her death, he attempted to dismember her body with a hacksaw.

But often claimed to have worked in the police force for 25 years. Additionally, he taught history at school and provided karate lessons to children for many years.

During the trial, But's wife testified that when he became intoxicated, he would strike her on the soles and heels with his feet. He chose this method as it inflicted significant pain without leaving visible marks. The woman filed a complaint with the police, and later sought a divorce.

Reports of But's death in Donbass emerged in January 2023. Details of his military service and the circumstances of his death remain unknown. A memorial plaque with the man’s name stands in Arzamas. The city administration awarded the Order of Courage to But's widow, two daughters, and stepmother.
